EX-SITU JAGUARS

There are over 300 jaguars in zoos worldwide1 and in order to maintain genetic and behavioural diversity these individuals are managed via breeding programmes. American and European ex-situ populations are managed separately through a Species Survival Program (SSP) and European Studbook (ESB) respectively. The American Zoo & Aquarium Association (AZA) and the European Association of Zoos & Aquaria (EAZA) each have a Felid Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) who are responsible for determining the level of management required by ex-situ felid species. Where possible, a coordinator is assigned to manage each breeding programme:

Jaguar ESB Coordinator:
Mark Pilgrim
Chester Zoo, UK

Jaguar SSP Coordinator:
Stacey Johnson
